We were lucky to have been awarded funding from the Future of News Fund to put these events on without charging young people to attend but those funds ran out in August. In order to put on another season, we need a little help from YOU. Unlike other remote career webinars, everything provided as part of the Remote programme is totally free – even the intensive 1-2-1 30 minute career clinics.

According to The Sutton Trust almost half of current undergraduates (46%) believe the pandemic has had a negative effect on their chances of funding a job and 39% of graduate employers say they expect to hire fewer graduates, or none at all, in the next 12 months. While we hope recent government funding for apprenticeship schemes can buck this trend, it’s clear that the economic impact of the pandemic is likely to last for some team and we believe PressPad Remote provides much-needed valuable, accessible and inclusive support. If you were one the thousands who benefited from Season 1, don’t pull the ladder up behind you, donate a small amount and ‘pass on’ the benefits to others. If you want to benefit from a second season a small donation will make a huge difference!

Living in Yorkshire, and being 16, I never thought journalism was for me - that was until I discovered PressPad. I love the community that PressPad has created and the willingness of people to help.

When the coronavirus pandemic hit the UK in March, we realised that we would have to pause our hosting service. We also quickly realised that many young people were going to be affected.

As newsrooms closed their doors and journalists began working from home, work experience placements and internships got cancelled. When the economy began to falter, many news organisations lost advertising revenue and announced sweeping redundancies and hiring freezes.

We decided to pivot to providing as much support as we could remotely. PressPad Remote was born. PressPad Remote was a successful programme of masterclasses, Q&As with rising stars in journalism, CV and pitch clinics and even speed mentoring on Zoom, which we held in Spring 2020.

On IGTV you can find most of our Q&As with talented journalists. These informal chats are well worth watching as our guests all offered lots of brilliant advice on how to break into journalism.

Our blog includes round-ups of some of our most popular events. Check out this one on preparing to get a journalism job, this one on the power of networking, this one on mobile journalism and here’s a list of some of the best pieces of advice from the whole first season. We also recently did a pop-up freshers event, here’s the accompanying blog which is all about how to ace your journalism course.

Here’s our YouTube playlist, which is where you can find all our masterclasses or start watching it right away below!

We’re proud to say nearly 8,000 people accessed PressPad Remote events during the first season of the programme. Anyone in the world could take part in it free of charge and it was delivered with the same standards of excellence and inclusivity as everything PressPad does.

After successfully pivoting to delivering this online programme, we have developed a strong reputation among journalists young and old. We have received incredible feedback from participants and have even seen attendees get commissions, job interviews and even jobs themselves after coming to one of our sessions.
