Hear from our interns

Annissa Warsame

Annissa grew up on free school meals in a deprived area of Birmingham. After almost being expelled from school, she turned her life around and became a star student committed to telling the stories of her community. Last summer she won a place on Shine a Light's Bright Young Reporter scheme, an award-winning investigative journalism project that publishes on openDemocracy. Shine a Light is a small non-profit team, and can't offer any financial support for their interns. Faced with the cost of either commuting to London for 4 weeks, Annissa was considering giving up this opportunity until she heard about PressPad. The video below tells her story.

Jabir Mustapha Sambo

When Jabir got offered two weeks of work experience at BBC Hausa in London, he couldn't believe his luck. Since he came from Nigeria to Aberdeen to study journalism, he dreamed of exploring London, working at the BBC and meeting his heroes Lyse Doucet and Stephen Sackur. We paired him up with Blathnaid Healy, who is the Head of CNN Digital and EMEA in London. For an international student based in Glasgow the cost of travelling to the capital, finding accommodation and navigating a new city would have been almost and insurmountable challenge. Lucky for him, his PressPad host Blathnaid Healy, who is the Head of CNN Digital at CNN London, gave him a place to stay and great advice. So much so that Jabir is now a freelance journalist with BBC Hausa! ‚Äč
